Filmmaking Teacher (PT)
The New School (TNS), an independent four-year high school in Atlanta, offers an innovative curriculum which blends traditional academic study and community engaged learning. Located in the heart of Atlanta, we treat the city as an essential classroom where learning is fueled by students’ curiosity. TNS students apply their classroom learning in the city through major interdisciplinary projects, an entrepreneurship program, and internships, and in the process develop portfolios of exceptional work and experiences. The New School is a community of about 80 students in grades 9-12 with 15 faculty members.
Position Summary
The New School seeks a creative, collaborative, and student-centered Part-Time Filmmaking Teacher to lead one section of high school Filmmaking. The course meets on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for two-hour sessions and serves students with a wide range of experience, from beginners exploring filmmaking for the first time to students with prior production experience.
The successful candidate will guide students through the filmmaking process—from concept development and storytelling to production and post-production—while fostering creativity, technical skills, collaboration, and artistic expression. The teacher will create a supportive learning environment that challenges students at multiple skill levels and encourages experimentation, problem-solving, and professional work habits.
Essential Responsibilities
- Develop and teach an engaging, hands-on filmmaking curriculum.
- Introduce students to all phases of film production, including:
- Story development and screenwriting
- Storyboarding and pre-production planning
- Directing
- Cinematography
- Audio recording
- Lighting
- Editing and post-production
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with varying levels of experience and technical proficiency.
- Facilitate individual and collaborative film projects.
- Teach safe and responsible use of cameras, lighting, audio, and editing equipment.
- Provide instruction in visual storytelling, composition, shot design, and cinematic language.
- Guide students through project planning, production schedules, and deadlines.
- Assess student growth through projects, presentations, reflections, and critiques.
- Foster a classroom culture that values creativity, collaboration, professionalism, and constructive feedback.
- Maintain accurate records of student progress and communicate effectively with families and school administrators as needed.

Qualifications
- Professional experience in filmmaking, video production, digital media, or a related creative industry.
- Teaching experience with high school students preferred.

Time Commitment
