Creative Writing Teacher (PT)

The New School (TNS), an independent four-year high school in Atlanta, offers an innovative curriculum which blends traditional academic study and community engaged learning. Located in the heart of Atlanta, we treat the city as an essential classroom where learning is fueled by students’ curiosity. TNS students apply their classroom learning in the city through major interdisciplinary projects, an entrepreneurship program, and internships, and in the process develop portfolios of exceptional work and experiences. The New School is a community of about 80 students in grades 9-12 with 15 faculty members.

Position Summary

The New School seeks a creative, collaborative, and student-centered Part-Time Creative Writing Teacher to lead one section of high school Creative Writing. The course meets on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for two-hour sessions and serves students with a wide range of experience, from beginning writers exploring creative expression to students with advanced writing interests and experience.

The successful candidate will guide students through the creative writing process while fostering imagination, critical thinking, effective communication, and confidence as writers. The teacher will create a supportive learning environment that challenges students at multiple skill levels and encourages experimentation, revision, reflection, and artistic growth.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Develop and teach an engaging, workshop-based creative writing curriculum.
  • Introduce students to multiple forms of creative writing which may include:
    • Fiction
    • Poetry
    • Creative nonfiction
    • Personal narrative
    • Flash fiction and short-form writing
    • Playwriting and/or screenwriting
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with varying levels of writing experience and ability.
  • Facilitate writing workshops that emphasize constructive feedback, revision, and peer collaboration.
  • Teach elements of craft, including:
    • Character development
    • Voice and point of view
    • Dialogue
    • Setting and imagery
    • Structure and pacing
    • Theme and literary techniques
  • Guide students through brainstorming, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing processes.
  • Encourage students to develop their unique voices while strengthening technical writing skills.
  • Assess student growth through writing portfolios, reflections, presentations, and published work.
  • Foster a classroom culture that values creativity, curiosity, risk-taking, empathy, and respectful critique.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and communicate effectively with families and school administrators as needed.

Qualifications

  • Professional experience in creative writing, publishing, journalism, English, communications, or a related field.
  • Teaching experience with high school students preferred.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and classroom management skills.
  • Ability to mentor students with diverse interests, backgrounds, and skill levels.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering student creativity and growth.

Time Commitment

  • Two class meetings per week (Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, 2 hours each).
  • Lesson planning, portfolio review, grading, and student feedback outside of class time.
  • Participation in school exhibitions and special events.
  • Attendance at Thursday faculty meeting from 12:15pm to 1:00pm.

Compensation

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications.
