"black & blue" Audio Song

ABOUT

Inspired by a favorite song of ours, Andrew, Rafi and I collaborated on a project for our audio class called “black & blue.” We worked on it for a few weeks, most of which was spent ideating and writing, and it’s an end result that I’m very proud of. We did all of the recording, tracking, and mixing in the software Soundtrap, which allowed us to record and edit remotely at the same time, and led to what I think was a fun and collaborative experience, and one that definitely had me trying new things I never would have tried on my own! I’m particularly proud of the warm, nostalgic bass tone I was able to create despite my complete prior lack of knowledge on bass processing, but I think the whole song as a piece turned out wonderfully, and I hope you enjoy it!

We all had some amount of input into the songwriting and instrumentals, and I took over tracking, mixing and adding effects to the bass and guitar parts. It was really interesting working with physical instruments and a DAW (digital audio workspace) at the same time and I learned lots of cool tricks and got some amazing tones out of our software. After tracking instruments and vocals, we added EQs and mixed the whole song so that it sounded like an actual song, and made our finishing touches from there. I’m personally very proud of how I did playing session instruments since I’m not very used to writing for songs that don’t have lead guitar or instruments as the main focus, and it was really valuable to see what the song actually needed rather than push the limits of what I could play.
